Claims of climate neutrality based on offsetting are not allowed under the EmpCo Directive.

    High risk

    Why the term is risky

    • The Directive bans claims that a product has neutral, reduced or positive climate impacts through offsetting.
    • Offsetting and a company's own emission reductions are frequently mixed together.

    How to word it verifiably

    • Describe concrete reductions with a base year and scope.
    • Communicate offsetting separately and without neutrality promises.

    Example: before / after

    Vorher

„A climate neutral holiday with us.“

    Nachher

„We cut emissions per overnight stay by X % since 2023. Remaining emissions are supported through a climate protection project.“

Figures and evidence in the example are placeholders. Use only substantiated values.
